What Are Wargs?

01

Overview

Wargs are large, wolf-like creatures with some humanoid characteristics, as well as a blend of characteristics from other creatures. They are quadrupedal, with the ability to become bipedal for short amounts of time, or when leaning on something. Wargs have an advanced styloid process similar to primitive humans, which has allowed them to develop the ability to grip and manipulate objects. You can see examples of what this looks like here.

A wargs shoulders have naturally developed in a way that permits outward/rotational movement in the forelegs similar to humans (like the motions you would use when swinging an object like a hammer); however, they do not share the same range of motion as a human. In contrast, their rear assembly is more wolf-like in terms of motion. Wargs possess ‘latent’ magic which essentially works as telekinesis and allows them to perform advanced crafting and weaponry movements.

Terminology: Warg or Wargs

Warg is a singular noun: "There was one warg in the market stall" "Only one warg made it out alive"
Wargs is the plural noun: "Three wargs came to my naming day ceremony" "A battalion of wargs showed up on the border"

In racial names as proper nouns are always singular: "Stonewarg are raiders." "Icewarg love to eat fish." "Thirty Woodwarg just showed up for a rave, time to get out the glowbugs."

Warg Societies

There are several different races of wargs, which all have different cultural and social expectations; however, work in much the same way, under the same societal 'structure'. At its most basic level, warg societies follow a thrall (indentured servant) and freefolk structure. Amongst the thralls there would be thralls of lower social standing (who do the jobs that are 'the lowest of the low') and higher social standing (who serve important wargs). Amongs the freefolk this is mirrored with freewargs who are poorer and freewargs who are richer. Above this structure is an overarching clan structure that is common across the races - whereby all wargs belong to clans.
