Overview

NPCs or Non-Playable Characters are characters that can be interacted with throughout the game but are not actively ‘played’ by a player. These may be personal NPCs, or they might be official NPCs. NPCs should not be featured in your story as much as your player character (PC) but are available to be utilized as guides and to help with a character's progress and growth.

Personal vs Official NPCs

Personal NPCs are ones that you use for yourself. They may be your PC’s parents or siblings, or other characters that occasionally feature in your PC’s life. They are usable by yourself and are not officially part of Hvalla’s main canon. They will not be tracked or to officially be ‘played’ by others.

Official NPCs are core to Hvalla’s canon. They are usable by players in all their stories and may appear in activities like Quests and Dungeons, or appear to help or hinder you in RPs. They and their appearances are officially tracked as part of Hvalla.

Romancing an NPC

Some NPCs may have ‘romancing’ options available if you wish to make them a part of your story. However, be aware that these characters being able to interact romantically with your character comes with guidelines to be followed.

The Guidelines

  • Your character may have a relationship with an NPC, but it does not mean that you ‘own’ the NPC or can control how the NPC relates to or interacts with other characters. Story Masters will continue to use the NPC in official content as needed, and it is your responsibility to adapt your character to the NPCs story accordingly.

  • Be aware that other players may have characters with relationships with the NPC your character does. Do not actively discourage other players, publicly or privately, from having their character pursue romance options with an NPC. NPCs available to romance are not monogamous, and they will not commit to, have a litter with, or marry any player character.

  • You must follow an NPCs ‘will’ and ‘will not’ traits on the NPCs DeviantArt description. Each NPC is slightly different, and this will give you a better indication of how a romance with the NPC will and will not work with your character.

  • If your character does have a romantic relationship with an NPC please ensure you mark this with an (R) next to your character’s name on the NPC tracking sheets.
